Anderson, of no fixed abode, did not enter any pleas when he appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court via video link from HMP Durham.

No application for bail was made by his solicitor Gerry Armstrong and he was remanded in custody to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on May 20.

The magistrates heard Anderson faces four further rape allegations to which he has been charged separately and on which he will be jointly tried with the latest claims against him.

He has previously pleaded not guilty to those rapes and the case is due to be heard at the crown court on July 7.
