Man released on bail after bomb squad called to 'suspicious items' at house in Amy Street, Sunderland

A 45-year-old man has been released on police bail after bomb squad were called to a property in Amy Street on Friday.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that a 45-year-old man who was arrested following the raid on Friday, June 26 has now been released on bail.

Officers executed the planned search warrant at around 9.50pm as part of an ongoing investigation at a property in the Southwick street.

When searching the property, police discovered some suspicious items and contacted bomb disposal experts to assist as a precaution.

It has since been confirmed by police that the items were not of an explosive nature and there is no wider threat to members of the public.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police previously said: “At 9.54pm yesterday (Friday) as part of an ongoing investigation, we executed a planned warrant at an address on Amy Street in Sunderland.

“When searching the address, officers discovered some suspicious items. As a precaution, police contacted bomb disposal experts to assist officers who are searching the address.

“After tests were carried out on the items, officers are now satisfied the items are not of an explosive nature and there is no wider threat to the public.”

On Sunday, June 28, officers confirmed that the 45-year-old man has been released on police bail.

Police are continuing to carry out inquires and urge the public to speak to an officer or call 101 if they have any concerns.
