Man with a knife arrested near Sunderland infant school after threatening to self harm

A man was arrested after being found to be in possession of a knife in Grindon on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to Gartland Road at 3.25pm today, Monday November 16 after receiving a report of concern for a man who was found to be carrying a knife.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article after threatening to self-harm and remains in custody.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 3.25pm we received a report of concern for a man.

"It was reported that he was in possession of a knife and was threatening to self-harm.

"Emergency services attended the area of Gartland Road and the man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.

"He remains in custody at this time. We would like to reassure the local community that this was an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.”
