Man given bail after appearing in court charged with crash which claimed woman's life

A man has appeared in court to face a charge of death by dangerous driving following a crash which claimed the life of another driver.

It follows a collision shortly before 4pm on Saturday, February 6, on the A1086 Thorpe Road in Horden, which left a woman aged in her 60s dead at the scene.

He was released on conditional bail by magistrates and will next appear before Durham Crown Court on Friday, March 12.

Flowers and notes have been left at the scene in tribute to the woman, who is yet to be named.

The crash involved a blue Ford Focus, which was being driven by the woman, and a red Mercedes C220, which had been travelling in opposite directions.

The road was closed off for eight hours as collision investigators carried out initial investigations into the tragedy, with witnesses urged to get in touch with Durham Constabulary.

The North East Ambulance Service responded to the call by sending two paramedic ambulances, its Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart) and a clinical manager following a call just after 4pm and then called in support from the Great North Air Ambulance’s car.

It took one patient to the James Cook University Hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information that could assist the investigation, is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 241 of February 6.
