Daniel Bates, 37, has been left with the bitter taste as he was threatened with prison over his attempt to take two pints of beer from the Royal Artillery Club in Mary Street on Wednesday, March 4.

District Judge Kathryn Meek told Bates, of Pickard Street, Millfield, Sunderland: “The starting point probably is a custodial sentence given your record.”
