Man charged after armed police join hunt for suspected Sunderland knifeman

A man has been charged after armed police joined the search for a reported knifeman.

Two men were initially arrested by Northumbria Police as part of the investigation after the alarm was raised in Parsons Road, Washington, at just after 2pm on Thursday, August 20.

A statement from the force on Thursday afternoon read: “It was reported a 23-year-old man had been threatened with a knife by another man.

“The suspect then fled the area in a vehicle.

“Officers were deployed to the area and following a search located the suspect’s vehicle on Coach Road Estate and arrested two men, both 20, on suspicion of affray.”

One of the 20-year-old men, from Washington, was later charged with affray and will appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 24, in connection with the incident.

The second man was cautioned by officers.
