Man arrested in Asda on suspicion of drink driving after car left abandoned in road

A 50-year-old suspected drink driver was arrested inside Asda in Ryhope after they found a vehicle, which they believed to have been involved in a collision, abandoned in the road.

The incident took place on Saturday, August 8 at around 7.50pm when Northumbria Police received a report that a suspected drink driver had been travelling along Ryhope Street South.

When officers attended the scene, they found an abandoned vehicle in the road which they believed had also been involved in a collision beforehand.

Police quickly worked to locate the occupant of the abandoned vehicle and shortly discovered that he was inside the nearby Asda store, also on Ryhope Street South.

Officers entered the store and located the 50-year-old man from Ryhope. He was then arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while under the influence.

It is not known if another vehicle was involved in the collision with the man’s vehicle or if anyone was hurt in the incident.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 7.50 pm on Saturday (August 8) we received a report a suspected drink-driver had been travelling on Ryhope Street South.

“Inquiries to locate the occupant were carried out and he subsequently detained by officers inside the nearby Asda store where he was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while under the influence.”
