Man arrested after a woman was assaulted and robbed in an Ashbrooke street

Northumbria Police have arrested a 28-year-old man after receiving reports that a woman was assaulted and robbed in The Avenue, Ashbrooke.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and released on bail after police received reports of an assault on a woman in The Avenue, Ashbrooke.

Officers were called to the Sunderland street at around 6.30pm on Friday, June 26 following a disturbance.

A woman at the scene reported that she had been assaulted by a group of offenders who had also stolen her mobile phone.

Police have confirmed that an investigation into the incident has been launched.

A 26-year-old woman was also arrested in connection to the incident but has since been released without charge.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 6.30pm on June 26 we were called to The Avenue, Sunderland, following a disturbance in the street.

“Officers attended and found a woman who reported she had been assaulted by a group of offenders, who also stole her mobile phone.

“The man has since been released under investigation, while the woman has been released with no further action to be taken.

“Inquiries are ongoing into the incident.”
