A man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences after he refused to stop for police, resulting in a car chase on the seafront at Seaburn.

The incident happened at around 11.30am today (Wednesday, May 27) when officers received reports of a suspicious vehicle travelling in Marina Avenue, Sunderland.

Police monitored the movements of the vehicle which was spotted on Whitburn Bents Road, Seaburn.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 11.30am today, police were alerted to a suspicious vehicle travelling in the Marina Avenue of Sunderland.

“Officers monitored the vehicle’s movements and it was seen a short time later in the Whitburn Bents Road area of Seaburn.

“The vehicle then failed to stop when instructed by police, and following a short pursuit, officers arrested a man on suspicion of driving offences.”

The man remains police custody.
