Man arrested after being found unconscious near Wearmouth Bridge

A man was arrested after he became aggressive to police officers who went to his aid.

Members of the public raised the alarm when they spotted the man slumped unconscious in Sunderland city centre yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, April 13.

Emergency services attended the scene, close to the Echo 24 building at the south end of Wearmouth Bridge, only for the man to become threatening towards police officers when he regained consciousness.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed officers had attended and the man had been arrested: “At 4.30pm yesterday, Tuesday, we received a report of concern for a man lying next to the underpass near Wearmouth Bridge, Sunderland,” he said.

“Emergency services attended and found a man in his 40s who was initially unresponsive. However, he awoke and was checked over by medical experts.

“The male later became aggressive towards officers and was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

"He received a caution.”
