Carl Minto, 28, of no fixed abode, was caught in the act at Asda’s Coronation Street store in South Shields on May 30.

Prosecutor Rebecca Gibson told South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court: “It was a Shark hoover. The footage shows it was blatant.

“He picked it up off the shelf and maybe uses some sort of implement to remove it from the shelving area, and leaves the store.

“There’s an application for compensation, but the item was recovered.”

She added: It’s unusual that there’s a full written representation by Asda.”

Minto also pleaded guilty to stealing £25 of alcohol and yogurt from J&H Local store, in Sunderland, on January 21.

Joanne Gatens, defending, said: “He would welcome the opportunity of an alcohol treatment requirement.”

District Judge Kathryn Meek told Minto he will be sentenced at the same court on July 2.

She granted him bail on condition he co-operates with the Probation Service’s compiling of a pre-sentence report.
