Man, 34, charged after teenager suffered serious injuries during 'disturbance'

A man has been charged with affray following a disturbance in Grange Villa which left an 18-year-old with serious injuries.

Police and ambulance crews were called to a disturbance in Albert Street, Grange Villa, on Saturday, July 25, which resulted in an 18-year-old suffering serious injuries, believed to be a stab wound.

North East Ambulance Service confirmed a man was taken to hospital after suffering a stab wound during an assault.

The 34-year-old has been charged with affray and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

He has been remanded in custody following his arrest and is expected to appear by video link at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Tuesday, July 28).

A further five men, who were arrested in connection with the incident, have been released under investigation while inquiries continue.

Officers investigating the incident are continuing to ask for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Durham Constabulary said yesterday (Sunday, July 26) that the teenager had suffered serious injuries but they were not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We received several calls to an incident on Albert Street at around 9.24pm last night to reports of a man who had been assaulted and was suffering from a stab wound.

"We sent a hazardous area response team, a paramedic ambulance and a specialist paramedic and transported one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”
