4.40pm: Comment from Durham Police

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called shortly after 8am today to Marlborough, in Seaham, following the discovery of a man’s body.

"Officers are currently treating his death as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.   

“Anyone with any information that could help the investigation should call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 60 of July 1.”

The details we have are limited but this is what we know:

*Emergency services were called to reports of an injured man at around 8am this morning (Wednesday, July 1).

*Forensic teams were on the scene but it is now understood they have left.

*A large police cordon remains in place in the Marlborough area of Seaham, with a number of police vehicles on the scene.

*Inquiries appear to centre around a house in the area.

12.40pm: Residents who live nearby speak to Echo reporter Fiona at the scene

A 48-year-old man decided to visit the scene after hearing something was happening in Marlborough in phone calls from his brothers.

He said: “There’s a lot of rumours going about, but until the police say what’s happened, it’s not for anyone else to say. I’ve seen the forensic going in there.”

A 55-year-old carer, who looks after a client in one of the nearby homes, said: “When I can down to work, it was all cordoned off and had to do some garden hopping to get to the house. All I could see was the tent set up outside.”

A 25-year-old man, who lives in one of the terraces close to the scene, said: “We just work up at about 9am and there were police cars everywhere. The tape went up and then we saw more and more police turn up and go around the other side.”
