During the brief hearing, Judge Paul Sloan QC told Wright that it was "almost inevitable" that he would receive a custodial sentence when he appears in court again later this year.

Both prosecution and defence representatives will now gather further statements to submit before sentencing, which will take place on Friday, December 4 at Newcastle Crown Court.

Mr Loughran had received treatment at the scene of the attack on Borough Road in Sunderland and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he died two days later.
