Helicopter search for suspect after man and woman assaulted in Sunderland

Northumbria Police officers have made an arrest following a helicopter search in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to a disturbance inside a house on Rosslyn Avenue at around 9.40am on Thursday, November 5.

The suspect had allegedly assaulted a man and woman before making off from the scene.

The National Police Air Service helicopter was called to assist Northumbria Police’s officers on the ground to trace him.

A 34-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of affray.

Witnesses reported seeing a large police presence in Rosslyn Avenue following the incident and the helicopter was spotted circulating the Ryhope area.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 9.39am today (Thursday) we received a report of a disturbance at an address on Rosslyn Avenue, Sunderland.

“It was reported that a man had assaulted another man and a woman inside the address before making off.

"Officers attended the scene and a 34-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of affray. He remains in police custody at this time. None of the parties involved suffered serious injury.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) attended, although the victims aren’t believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

A NEAS spokesperson added: “We were called at 10.25am to a private address in Rosslyn Avenue, Sunderland. We dispatched two of our hazardous area response teams”
