‘He should be ashamed’ – Police condemn a Sunderland man who drove on footpaths and the wrong way around a roundabout during a high-speed chase

A Northumbria Police inspector has condemned the actions of Adam Calvert after he led police on a high-speed pursuit.

During an eight-and-a-half minute chase, Calvert tore down residential streets at up to three times the legal speed time, as well as driving on footpaths and through red lights.

On Wednesday, May 13, he pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance along with use and possession of amphetamine.

Inspector Lynne Mckevitt, of Northumbria Police's Operations Department condemned Calvert’s dangerous actions.

She said: “He could easily have caused significant injury to members of the public as he drove down footpaths, through red lights and even the wrong way around a roundabout.

“His actions were so dangerous that we were left with no choice but to forcibly bring his car to a stop, a tactic that we usually only use as a last resort.”

Inspector Mckevitt also expressed her praise to officers who managed to bring the chase to a swift end.

She added: “Thankfully nobody was injured and officers were able to detain Calvert with minimal disruption.

“Calvert should be ashamed of his actions that night and count himself lucky that he has nothing more severe to live with.

“I would like to thank my staff in the motor patrols department who expertly brought this dangerous driver to an abrupt halt.”
