A police investigation is ongoing following an incident which has led to a 17-year-old girl being taken to hospital with a ‘serious, life-threatening head injury’.

Police received the report in the early hours of Thursday, January 9, when the teenager was admitted to hospital.

An 18-year-old man remains in custody on Friday, January 10, after being arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving .

A number of police cordons were in place near East Rainton on Thursday, January 9, including one at the old railway lines near Hazard Lane.

Residents reported seeing a large police presence in the area throughout the day on Thursday.

Detectives investigating the incident are now appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or has any information to speak to police.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “At about 2.15am on Thursday morning police received a report that a 17-year-old female had been taken to hospital with a serious, life-threatening head injury. She remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

“Inquiries are ongoing as to how the girl has sustained the head injury but an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in police custody at this time.

“Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact police on 101 quoting log 58 09/01/20.”
