The suspected raider was eager to get away, but the alert homeowner managed to corner him in the rear yard and swiftly rang police.

Officers attended the address on Chester Mews within nine minutes and placed a 24-year-old man under arrest.

He has since been charged with burglary and is due to appear before the courts in the new year.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Robson, of Northumbria Police has today heaped praise on the resident’s bravery and says he should be proud of his actions.

“Burglary is an incredibly intrusive crime and it must have been a horrible incident for the victim to come face-to-face with an intruder in his home,” DCI Robson said.

“While we would never encourage members of the public to put themselves in the way of potential harm, the homeowner should be incredibly proud of himself for the way he responded.

“His quick thinking under pressure, and importantly alerting officers as quickly as possible, helped us get to the scene within minutes and detain a suspected burglar.

“I’d like to thank the victim for his outstanding efforts, and as we head towards Christmas, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of taking an extra second to help deter opportunistic thieves.

“Please keep your doors and windows locked and make sure any valuables including Christmas presents are kept out of sight. Our officers will continue to carry out patrols over the festive period and will use every tactic at our disposal to bring thieves and burglars to justice.”
