This dumping was carried out in broad daylight.

The woodland is yards from Pottery Lane, which itself leads down to the banks of the River Wear.

Both incidents have been reported. However, there have been a number of other fly-tipping instances in the area and residents are angry.

Councillor Michael Mordey, deputy council leader and cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Fly-tipping is not only illegal and anti-social but it can also be extremely dangerous when it is dumped in the middle of a road as was the case here.

"We have already made it clear that we have a zero tolerance approach to anyone who we catch fly-tipping or littering.

“We know that the vast majority of our residents take a real pride in where they live and hate to see their neighbourhoods blighted by waste.
