Five remain in custody as Sunderland murder investigation continues

Five people arrested in connection with the death of a man in Sunderland remain in the custody of Northumbria Police.

The force confirmed on Friday, June 5 that four people arrested on suspicion of murder, and a fifth person arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, remain in custody as inquiries continue into the death of a 48-year-old man in the city.

Emergency services were called to Aintree Road, Farringdon, shortly after midday on Wednesday, June 3 following reports of concern for a man.

The body of Sunderland man Andrew John Mather – who was formally identified by police – was discovered at an address in the street.

A 50-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

As inquiries into the incident continue, all five people remain in police custody.

Officers have been spotted at a number of locations in the city – including Purley Road and York Road – as the investigation continues.
