Dog dies from injuries after runaway car mounts pavement near Sunderland Greyhound Stadium

A dog died after a collision with a car which mounted a pavement before driving away from the scene.

Northumbria Police have today released details of the vehicle they want to trace following the incident on the A184, near Sunderland Greyhound Stadium, which has left the pet’s family “devastated”.

The force say at about 9.45pm on Monday, October 5, that a teenage male was walking his dog when a blue Peugeot reportedly mounted the pavement and collided with one-year-old Lurcher cross Callie before driving away from the scene.

A police statement added: “The dog sadly died from the injuries sustained – leaving the family devastated.”

Officers have been carrying out a number of lines of inquiry over the last few weeks in a bid to trace the driver.

They now have released details of the car in the hope that somebody has information that can assist the ongoing investigation.

PC Olivia Close, from the force, said on Friday, November 13: “This incident has caused a huge amount of shock and sadness to the family and we are treating it seriously.

“We are carrying out a number of inquiries in a bid to trace the person responsible and am now asking anyone with information – or the driver involved – to come forward.”

Anyone with information about the blue Peugeot or its driver is asked to contact the force via the Tell Us Something page of their www.northumbria.police.uk website or by telephoning them on 101, quoting incident log number 1197 051020.
