Do you know this man? CCTV appeal after 'distraction' theft at Washington pub

Northumbria Police officers investigating a distraction theft in a Washington pub have released an image of a man they would like to trace.

A man entered The Blue Bell pub on Coach Road, Usworth, and asked staff to exchange a sum of money for differing denominations.

He then deliberately distracted and confused staff in order to obtain more money than he started with – making off with £30.

It happened on Wednesday, December 11 – and the force has now issued an image of a man officers would like to speak to.

He was in the pub at the time and could have information that can assist officers.

Detective Constable Michael Wilson called on business owners and staff to be vigilant.

He said “This type of theft relies on sleight of hand and is merely a cynical attempt to steal money from your premises.

“I would encourage all business owners and their employees to be aware that some individuals do use this tactic - often asking for large sums of money to be exchanged - with the aim of leaving with more cash than they started with.

“Quite often this type of crime is carried out during a busy period when offenders try to confuse or distract staff dealing with multiple customers.

“If anybody is uncertain of a person’s intentions or are suspicious when asked to exchange money in this manner, you should politely decline the request and notify the police.”
