Destruction at Sainsbury's Local in East Boldon as shopfront smashed in ram raid

This is the scene after a supermarket’s shopfront was destroyed by a vehicle, with Northumbria Police calling on members of the public to come forward with information.

The front of the shop is smashed-in, with the glass windows smashed and products strewn both under the shutter and out into the street.

Sergeant Angela Lewis, of Northumbria Police, said in a statement on Friday: “Shortly after 11.15pm yesterday we received a report of a suspected ram raid at Sainsbury’s off Station Road, East Boldon.

“It was reported that a vehicle had rammed into the shutters of the store, causing significant damage. The occupants then gained access to the shop and stole a number of items, before leaving the scene in the same vehicle.

“An investigation has been launched into the incident and officers have since located a blue Subaru Forrester van believed to have been used in the offence burnt out in a field off Newcastle Road.

“Inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible and we would ask anybody who saw anything suspicious in the area or who have information that can assist with our investigation to come forward.”
