Cyclist threatened with machete in attack on busy Sunderland road

Detectives have launched an investigation into an attack which saw a cyclist threatened with a machete in Sunderland.

Northumbria Police launched an appeal for witnesses after the incident, which happened on Springwell Road in the city.

Officers received a report that a 20-year-old man had been attacked as he was cycling along the busy road on Tuesday, June 23 at around 8.30pm.

As the cyclist reached the central reservation near the Lidl supermarket on Durham Road, he was stopped by two other men, who were also on bikes.

One of the men threw the victim’s bike to the ground and threatened him with a machete before making off from the scene, Northumbria Police said in a statement on Tuesday, July 14.

The force believes that one of the men involved in the assault was known to the victim, who was not injured but has been left shaken following the ordeal.

Police also believe that anybody travelling on Springwell Road by car at that time, who may have dashcam footage, might be able to assist them with their inquires into the incident.
