Crieff Square disturbance: Injured man in 'stable' condition as police investigate attempted murder in Sunderland

The car was found burnt out in Wendover Way area of Witherwack.

The incident happened in Sunderland's Crieff Square, Hylton Castle, in the early hours of Tuesday.

A 31-year-old man was left with serious injuries as a result of being hit by a car following a disturbance involving a “large group” of individuals.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed yesterday that the man remains in hospital, but that his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Officers launched an attempted murder investigation on Wednesday and inquiries are ongoing.

Members of the public are being asked if they have seen a black 2003 BMW X5 being driven around Sunderland in recent weeks.

The car, believed to have been used in the incident, was found burnt out in the Wendover Way area of Witherwack.

The vehicle is also thought to have used two different registration plates over the last fortnight – C16 VEB and WM53 OZD.

Emergency services were called to Crieff Square in Sunderland.

Detective Inspector Sean Mcguigan, of Northumbria Police’s Southern CID, said: “We are treating this incident incredibly seriously and we will take swift and robust action against anybody found to have been involved.

“I would like to thank members of the community who have already come forward with information, and would ask anybody yet to do so to get in touch.”
