Cordon remains in Sunderland street after man suffered serious head injuries in 'violent' attack

Police officers attended Claxheugh Road, Sunderland, at around 4.30pm on Wednesday, January 29 following reports of an attack in the street.
Northumbria Police confirmed on Thursday, January 30 that a man is fighting for his life in hospital.

Hide AdA 29-year-old man suffered serious head injuries in the assault and remains in a critical condition.
Police have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
He remains in custody and is assisting officers with their inquiries, while a 25-year-old man is also being spoken to in connection with the incident.
Detective Sergeant Andy Richardson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a very serious assault that has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.

Hide Ad“His family have been notified and are being supported by officers at this time.
“For reasons still to be established, the victim has been violently attacked in the street and was found unconscious after suffering significant head injuries.
“We are committed to establishing the circumstances behind the assault and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
“We believe all parties are known to each other and this was an isolated incident.”

Hide AdOne resident, who did not wish to be named but lives nearby, spoke to the Echo at the scene on Thursday.
They said: "The police have been here for quite a while. Just about every officer in Sunderland has been here.
"There is even one who has been here from Hendon. They are coming from all over.
"It has been a complete surprise. It is normally very quiet."

Hide AdAdditional patrols will take place in the area on Thursday, the force added, with members of the public urged to speak to an officer at the scene directly if they have any concerns.
