Colin John Brown, 35, was told a prison sentence was inevitable because he committed the offence while still on licence following a previous conviction.

Magistrates said the assault, which took place at Pennywell Bail Hostel, in Hylton Road, Sunderland, “was aggravated by the defendant’s record of previous offending”.

Brown, of no fixed address, was said to have unexpectedly carried out the attack after entering a common room area at the hostel in a drunken state.
