Assaulting police officers and drink driving - a round up of recent Sunderland court cases

The following cases involving people from the Sunderland area have taken place recently in Sunderland or South Shields at South Northumbria Magistrates’ Court:

Thursday, 23rd July 2020, 7:00 am

Kevin Burrell, 58, of no fixed address, received an 18-week jail term, which was suspended for 12 months, was fined £80 and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs after he admitted committing assault in Sunderland on January 28.

Brad Middleton, 24, of Store Terrace, Easington Lane, was banned from driving for a year, placed on a community order and ordered to pay £25 compensation, a £90 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs after he admitted drug driving, taking a vehicle without consent, driving without a valid licence and driving without insurance on November 23 last year.

Lee Alan Ruddick, 33, of Priors Grange, High Pittington, near Durham City, received five penalty points on his licence, was fined £80 and ordered to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs after admitting careless driving on February 13.

These cases have been heard by South Northumbria Magistrates' Court either in Sunderland, above, or South Shields.

Joshua Gibbons, 18, of Baden Crescent, Town End Farm, Sunderland, was banned from driving for a year, fined £150 and ordered to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs after admitting taking a car without the owner’s consent, driving without insurance and driving without a valid licence on November 2 last year.

Leslie Mills, 56, of Longfield Road, Sunderland, was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £150 and ordered to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs after admitting drug driving and possessing cannabis on September 19 last year.

Scott Armstrong, 24, of Silloth Road, Sunderland, was fined £583 and ordered to pay £75 compensation, a £58 victim surcharge and £85 costs after admitting assaulting a male police officer on January 16.

Gavin Warcup, 24, of Fountains Crescent, Houghton, was fined £276 and ordered to pay £160 compensation, a £32 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs after admitting assault and causing criminal damage to a garden fence on December 22 last year.

The cases were dealt with by South Northumbria Magistrates' Court in either Sunderland or South Shields, above.
