Arson investigation launched after car fire in busy Sunderland street

A car fire on a busy Sunderland road is being treated as an arson attack, detectives have confirmed.

Emergency services were called shortly before 9.15pm on Monday, August 24, to reports of a car on fire in Leechmere Road, Sunderland.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and an investigation into the incident has been launched – with officers treating it as a suspected arson attack.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as suspected arson.

“Anyone with information can get in touch via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 1094 240820.”

A large number of calls were made to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service and one crew from Farringdon Community Fire Station attended at 9.10pm.
