Conartists try to trick man out of thousands of pounds for roof repairs

Police are appealing for information after a conmen tried to dupe a man out of thousands of pounds to carry out roof repairs.

The incident was reported to police yesterday after men called at an address in Dinsdale Street in Ryhope and claimed they had replaced tiles on the roof.

The occupant had attempted to withdraw cash to pay them for the work from his bank, however staff deemed it suspicious and advised him to contact police.

The men who called at his address are described as around 30-years-old.

One of the men had dark hair and was wearing dark jogging bottoms, a black hoody with a logo on the back, a black baseball cap, brown work boots.

He is described as around 6ft tall and had stubble.

The second man is described as mousey hair, smaller, slightly more stocky and wearing a light grey hoody with red writing on the back and a light grey/white baseball cap, light coloured jogging bottoms and very tanned.

Officers are carrying out enquiries and appealing for information.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police want to reiterate advice about bogus callers and warn people to be on their guard.

"In particular, people with elderly and vulnerable family and friends should make sure they are aware to be cautious as they are often the target for conmen.

"If any doubt contact police."
