Coastguard call outs over Sunderland bridge and pier alerts

A person spotted on the wrong side of the Wearmouth Bridge's railings and concerns for someone on Roker Pier sparked emergency service call outs.

Sunderland's HM Coastguard team were called just after 7pm yesterday after police called for help when someone was seen on the outside of the railing on the bridge.

The crew were stood down before they arrived after they were told the incident had been "safely resolved."

The team was then called just before 7.50pm to assist police after fears for someone on Roker Pier.

A spokesman for the service said: "On arrival having spoken to police and on further investigation, the person was located safe and well at another location."
