Cleadon - Down Your Way

Cleadon WI meets tonight in All Saints' parish hall at 6.30pm when there will be a demonstration of scarf tying. New members and visitors are very welcome.

The Mothers’ Union of All Saints’ Church meets on Thursday in the Chapter House at 2pm. Last month members and visitors enjoyed a talk by the Rev June Talbot, which included some humorous anecdotes, and this was followed by tea and refreshments and chat. All are welcome.

Also on Thursday, the Thursday Club meets in the Old Schoolroom, next to All Saints’ parish hall, at 1.30pm. This is a group of retired people who enjoy socialising with monthly talks and demonstrations, outings and theatre visits. This month, Janet Wylie will be speaking about The Village that Vanished.

On Saturday from 10.30am to noon, there will be a coffee morning in All Saints’ parish hall with a bring-and-buy stall and a raffle,. There will be plenty of coffee and tea with scones and biscuits. Organised by the church’s Married Couples Group, the proceeds are in aid of the cancer support charity, Daft as a Brush.

Also on Saturday, Cleadon Methodist Church is holding an afternoon tea in it hall from 3pm until 5.30pm. Entrance is £5, which you can pay at the door and there will be entertainment from The Three Wise Men.

Christian Aid Week begins on Sunday for one week. The charity helps people in very poor circumstances to try to help themselves with tools, seeds, water filters, which set people up to earn a living for themselves. This week is its biggest fundraiser and the people of Cleadon have always shown generosity for this cause. When the envelope arrives, gift aid your gift if you can and have it ready for collection. If you miss your collector, please bring your envelope to either of the village churches or ring 5363346 to arrange a time to collect it. Your kindness is very much appreciated.

Experience Pentecost is an opportunity for children in Cleadon Village Church of England Academy to come up to All Saints’ Church and learn about Whitsuntide through story and activity. On Monday and Tuesday, small groups of children visit the different stations set up around the church to be told each part of the story.

The Married Couples Group meets on Monday at 7.30pm.

Cleadon Scout Group is holding a street party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. It will be held at West Hall Campsite from 1pm on Sunday, June 12. Ring 07891 166011 if you would like to go.

This year’s Bede’s Way Sponsored Walk takes place on June 25, walking from St Paul’s Church in Jarrow and ending at St Peter’s Church in Monkwearmouth, a 12-mile walk, with a short stop on Cleadon Hills, at the windmill, for a short talk and some refreshment. There is also a four-mile walk which starts and finishes at St Peter’s Church in Monkwearmouth. Sponsorship is in aid of Christian Aid to fight poverty step by step.
