Chris Coleman won't receive pay cut if Sunderland are relegated

Follow our live blog here:The Sunderland boss has confirmed there is no pay cut clause in his contract should the worst happen.

The Black Cats could be relegated this afternoon at the Stadium of Light if they drop points against Burton Albion and other results go against them.

Coleman replaced Simon Grayson in November, signing a two-and-a-half year contract.

It was a real coup to land the former Wales manager but Sunderland's struggles have continued. Also, takeover talk continues to cause uncertainty at Sunderland, which Coleman again alluded to.

Coleman confirmed: "There’s no clause in my contract."

He added: "But we’re on territory that’s tough to comment on because of the off-field situation. Any club that gets relegated, there’s consequences for everybody.

"The problem we’ve got is that we don’t know who is going to be here above me [as owner of the club].

"We can talk forever – ‘Are we keeping this one, are we keeping that one, his contract’s up, he’s got a clause, he hasn’t’ – we could be here all day, but none of it matters until we know who is going to be here upstairs, and what their plan is for this football club.

"Then, the questions about the future are easier to answer. We can say, ‘Right, we’re cutting our cloth here because this is what we’re being told and that is what we’ve got to play with’ or ‘we’re going to have to make things tighter’.

"At the minute, it’s the uncertainty and not knowing that is the hardest thing."

As revealed by the Echo, several of the Sunderland squad are in line for 40 per cent pay cuts should the club be relegated.

Players signed since relegation from the Premier League, and those that have signed new contracts since, will see a 40 per cent cut.

That includes the likes of Aiden McGeady, Callum McManaman and Jason Steele.

However, those that were already at the club before the Premier League relegation will not see a further cut in wages on top of last summer's 40 per cent cut.

That means the likes of Lee Cattermole, Didier Ndong, Lamine Kone, Adam Matthews won't see further cuts.

Jack Rodwell, who didn't have a cut last summer, will see his £70,000 a week wages cut this summer by 40 per cent though, his cut kicks in after the club failed to bounce straight back to the Premier League.
