Officers describe the suspect as wearing a biscuit-coloured hoodie and of medium build.

Sgt Ash Hopper, of the Sunderland West Neighbourhood Team, described the vandalism spree as "quite destructive" and said he had teams of officers in the area carrying out inquiries.

He added: "Someone has walked from Southend Road, Grindon Lane and Gleneagles Road with some sort of sharp implement. They have scratched cars as they walked. It would take about 10 to 15 minutes to walk that.

"Some of them are scratched from the front to the back, the full length of the car.

"We got the first call at ten past 1 and a few calls from people who witnessed it. We are speaking to them.

"When we came on this morning and people were getting out of bed and ringing us, we had a deluge of calls.

"I sent my team up to find the victims and speak to them instead of waiting for them to contact us. For each of them personally, it is quite destructive."

Sgt Hopper said between 50 and 60 cars had been attacked and he urged anyone with information which could help with the investigation to get in touch.

A police statement said: "Enquiries are on-going and police are appealing for help to identify the person responsible. He is described as being of medium built and wearing dark clothes and a biscuit coloured hoodie."

In the meantime, more security has been put in place for the area affected by the crimes.

A spokesman said: "Extra patrols are being carried out in the area."
