A person has been taken to hospital with a ‘serious chest wound’ after an emergency services call-out to a Sunderland street.

Teams were called to the Westheath Avenue area of Grangetown on Saturday morning, January 9, where a patient was taken to hospital with a serious chest wound.

Witnesses say there was a large police presence in the area and a section of the street was said to be cordoned off by officers throughout Saturday and into Sunday morning.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 7.07am on Saturday to reports of a person with a serious chest wound near Westheath Avenue in Sunderland.

"We dispatched an ambulance, a hazardous area response team and requested support from a Great North Air Ambulance doctor and transported one patient to hospital.”

The circumstances surrounding how the patient sustained the chest wound or their current condition have not yet been confirmed.

Northumbria Police have been contacted for further details.
