Car fire sends column of black smoke into sky above Sunderland city centre

Firefighters have tackled a burning car which sent a thick column of smoke into the air over Sunderland city centre.

A crew from Sunderland Central Fire Station was called to Burdon Road, at the side of the civic centre, this evening, Monday, June 15.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called to a report of a car on fire next to Mowbray Park.”

Police attended but it is believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
