Here's how the players rated...

JASON STEELE

Left exposed by Cattermole losing the ball for the first goal and a big deflection for the third. Has faced criticism but largely blameless here. 6

BILLY JONES

Moved back to his favoured right-back position thanks to Kone's return and despite a testing first half in which Clarke and Watkins caused him problems, grew into the game. 6

LAMINE KONE

Performed well on his return to the side, making a number of important tackles and clearances. 6

JOHN O'SHEA

Will have been disappointed to allow Jozefzoon past him in the build-up to the first goal. Good in the air under intense second half pressure. 6

BRYAN OVIEDO

Outstanding tackle and pass to get Sunderland back on level terms. Fortunate to see his corner palmed in by Bentley but a solid performance in front of McGeady. 7

LEE CATTERMOLE

Brushed off the ball too easily for the opening goal, though clearly felt he was fouled. 5

DIDIER NDONG

Somewhere back to his best, making so many tackles and interceptions near his own goal. Unfortunate to penalised for the free-kick that led to Brentford's second, seemingly winning the ball. 7

DUNCAN WATMORE (McManaman, 66)

Struggled to make the most of some promising positions in the opening quarter but did superbly to win the penalty, spinning away from the defence and waiting for the inevitable foul from behind. A constant threat before tiring a touch. 7

AIDEN McGEADY (Gooch, 88)

Gave the ball away too easily, went close to making it 4-2 but could only find the side-netting. Grayson's pre-match comments about decision making left ringing true. 5

GEORGE HONEYMAN

Played in his favoured number ten role, looked to be growing into the game in the opening exchanges of the second half but unable to make a significant contribution. 5

LEWIS GRABBAN (Vaughan, 83)

Composure personified with both his fine finish to level the scores and a good penalty to put his side two goals clear at the break. Faded in influence in the second half as Sunderland were penned in. 7
