Boldon - Down Your Way

Three Year 11 students at Boldon School, Dan, Arron and Tony were on a course last term at Wellfield School and the feedback from their tutor was excellent. They were the top students with mainly distinctions for all of their work and recognised as being a credit to Boldon School. During this year they will complete Unit 7 Brickwork and Blockwork Principals and Techniques; Unit 6 Joinery Exploring Carpentry and Joinery.

The next Jarrow/Boldon CAF meeting will be held on Thursday, March 3, at a venue yet to be decided.

East Boldon Methodist Church, on the corner of Bridle Path in East Boldon, will hold its regular first and third Wednesday coffee morning of the month on Wednesday, February 3, at 10am. There will be the usual stalls, homemade cakes, bring-and-buy and coffee, tea and homemade refreshments.

The Boldons History Group will meet tonight at 7pm in the function room of The Grey Horse in East Boldon.

The Boldon Miners and Community Banner Group will meet in The Robert’s Room of the Boldon Community Association Centre on New Road, Boldon Colliery, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, February 2. Members would like to extend an invitation to anyone who might be interested in the work of the group to join them at any of their monthly meetings.

East Boldon Infant’s School is holding a World Book Day in school on Wednesday, March 2. The children will be celebrating by going to school dressed as their favourite storybook character. During the week the children will be reading books by their favourite authors and will be having a sponsored read to raise funds for literacy resources. The school’s Spring Celebration will take place in St George’s Church on Front Street on Monday, March 7, at 2pm. Year 1 will be leading the performances and the whole school will be participating.

A free community workshop will be held during half term in East Boldon Library in Boker Lane. You can join the Explore Learning creative writing workshop, which is being held on Friday, February 19, by contacting 0191 424 7853. A Day at the Zoo for ages five to six will take place from 9.30am to 10.30am on February 19. The Beast Quest workshop aimed at children 10 years plus will take place on the same day from 11am to noon. For children eight to nine years the workshop, entitled Captain Underpants, will take place from 1.30pm to 2.30pm and from 3pm to 4pm the Alice in Wonderland workshop for ages six to seven will help Alice to make sense of all the nonsense through the rabbit-hole These workshops are free but spaces are limited so booking is required by contacting East Boldon Library. The library will be open to the public on Saturday morning February 13,when Joan Atkinson, Labour Councillor for East Boldon and Cleadon will hold a Surgery.

For World Book Day History Wardrobe presents Fairy tale Fashion, the story of the Cinderella Dress. This event will take place at South Shields Central Library on Thursday, March 3, at 6.30pm. Tickets are £2.50.

Cleadon Floral Arrangement Society held its AGM last Tuesday in All Saint’s Church Hall in Cleadon. At the February meeting, which will take place on the third Tuesday of the month, members will welcome floral demonstrator and current area chairman of NAFAS, Karl Brunton, who will arrange flowers on the theme All Seasons. The demonstration will start at 7.30pm after which all arrangements will be raffled and light refreshments served. The group extends a warm welcome to old and new members and visitors. If you are interested in relaxing while watching a floral artist demonstrate or wish to pick up a few tips you will be very welcome.

Some members of the West Boldon Residents’ Association have already taken advantage of the odd hours of better weather in January to start the annual spring tidy-up throughout the village. Members appeal to anyone living in the area to do what they can to help sweep leaves and litter etc from pavements and gutters near where they live. The next meeting takes place in The Wheatsheaf in West Boldon at 10am on Wednesday, February 10. Everyone is welcome.
