Boldon crime author looks to inspire others wanting to write a ‘killer thriller’

A Boldon-born crime thriller author is set to give some hints and tips to aspiring writers.

A crime writer from Boldon, who wrote her first book at the age of 61, has said “it’s never too late to follow your writing dream” as she looks to inspire other potential authors.

Marrisse Whittaker is set to speak at The Word, in South Shields town centre, during the venue’s Write Festival this September to give hints and tips to anyone who interested in writing a ‘killer thriller’.

The author’s first book, The Magpie, was written during the 2020 Covid lockdown and picked up by Bloodhound Books in a three-book deal.

Now Marrisse’s sixth book, A Body of Lies, has just been published - with all of her thrillers featuring characters based in the North East of England.

‘Never too late to follow your writing dream’

Ahead of speaking at The Word, Marrisse hopes that the sessions will provide an insight into the publishing industry for anyone who is aspiring to be an author.

She commented: “It’s never too late to follow your writing dream.

“I would be thrilled if someone who comes along for the three, two hour sessions returns to the Write Festival next year to talk about their own debut crime novel.

“The world of publishing seemed like a closed book, if you’ll pardon the pun, until I finally got my book deal.

“I wish I could have just asked a published author how it all worked.

“So that’s my plan for this course: three relaxed and cheery sessions after which I hope the attendees can leave with the tools they need to create their own killer thrillers.”

The three sessions with Marrisse will take place on September 1, 17 and 23.
