The Sunderland midfielder joined Championship side Rovers on a loan deal until the end of the season on deadline day, with Steven Fletcher heading out the exit door to Marseille.

And the Rovers boss has revealed his delight at capturing the Spaniard on loan.

Lambert said: "I'm delighted we're getting somebody of Jordi's talent coming in.

"He comes from Spain, he's played in the division before with Swansea and Wigan, before going to Sunderland, so he's a technically very gifted footballer and I think that's something we needed, someone who is good on the ball.

"The move happened very quickly and it was a really long day, but the club have been great to get it done.

"It was important we brought Jordi in and now we have options, which is what we want. So it was a big night for us.

"We needed somebody in the middle of the pitch who is comfortable on the ball. We do have lads that can do that, but he's seen it and done it.

"It was important to bring in somebody like that.

"To be fair to him, as soon as I asked him to come down, he was straight down the motorway and right here.

"There was no hesitation from him, he wanted to come and get playing again, so I'm absolutely delighted he’s come here."

Gomez, who isn't part of Sam Allardyce's first team plans at Sunderland, added: "I'm really happy to be here at a club like Blackburn and I'm ready to give my best.

"I didn't know about the move until late afternoon then everything happened very quickly.

"I'm just happy that it got sorted.

"The manager told me his ideas and about the team and about me, and hopefully I can do everything that he wants me to do."
