Signed on loan from Sunderland at the end of the January transfer window, the Spaniard marked his first outing in blue and white with a stunning goal in the 1-1 draw with title-hopefuls Middlesbrough.

And Lambert was delighted with the display of his loan signing.

"His goal was deserved for his performance because I thought he was outstanding," said Lambert.

"You can tell he has that little bit extra, there's that quality there.

"He is a top player, he makes the game look easy which all top players do.

"He's an unassuming character, he doesn't say much, but his performance was outstanding.

"We are fortunate to have him and if he keeps performing like that then we've got a terrific signing."

The Spaniard hadn't even been in the Sunderland matchday squad during 2016, with Sam Allardyce making it clear that the ex-Wigan man - who has another 18 months to run on his contract - was free to leave the Stadium of Light.

Gomez was pleased with the display at title-favourites Boro, adding: "I thought we deserved the win because we had some really good chances.

"They are at the top of the league and they are a really good team, so it was good from us to do this performance.

"Hopefully we can take that confidence that we took and get good results from now until the end of the season.

"We have the team to go higher, but we have to go game by game, the first thing is to put in a good performance and the results will come for sure."
