The demonstrator at Sunderland Floral Art Club was Heather Curry. As well as being a good demonstrator, Heather entertained everyone with her mischievous dry sense of humour. The title of her demonstration was The Basket Case. The meeting was held in The Royalty Theatre. The group meets every month with a guest demonstrator.

Margaret, June and Linda were at Burn Park Methodist Church Easter coffee morning. Everyone enjoyed the event, which had stalls, and the chance to enjoy a bacon or sausage sandwich, as well as coffee. June went along in her Easter bonnet.

A Compass Acapella concert will be held at St Gabriel’s Church on Saturday, April 23, from 7pm-9pm. Tickets are £4 and must be bought before the event from the church office on 514 2397.

Arthritis Care Sunderland holds its next meeting tomorrow from 6pm-8pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. The group usually meets on the first Wednesday of the month.

Sunderland Branch of Save The Children is holding a fundraising family fun day on Saturday, April 16, from noon-3pm at Sunderland Bangladeshi Centre, Tatham Street. Stalls and activities will be suitable for all ages, including tombolas raffles, homebake, books, bric-a-brac, children’s games and stalls, crafts and other stalls. Entrance is 50p and children free.

Burn Park Methodist Church presents A Piano Recital and afternoon tea with Alan Bowers on Saturday, April 30, at 2pm Tickets are £5, available from church members or call Elma on 525 1930.

Open Arms Carers coffee morning takes place at St Nicholas Church in The Aiden Room tomorrow from 10.30am-noon. The programme includes various activities, an opportunity to share stories, simply listen and be listened to, as well as providing signposting information.

Barnes, Pallion and Millfield Residents’ meeting takes place tonight at 7pm in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street.

All budgerigar fanciers are invited to the next meeting of The Sunderland Budgerigar Society tomorrow to hear speakers Peter Watts and John Charlton, from Redcar, at Deptford and Millfield Community Association, Havelock Towers, 288 Hylton Road. Meetings continue to be held on the first Wednesday of each month, at 7.30pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served during the meeting. In their talks the speakers cover the whole range of topics about budgerigar breeding and exhibition. This hobby is enjoyed by people of all ages from many walks of life and can be enjoyed with limited resources. Go along and meet the members to learn more. Sunderland Floral Art Club is holding a fundraising day in aid of The Great North Air Ambulance on Tuesday, April 19. Numbers are limited because of space and catering and must be booked and paid for by April 12. To book, contact Pam on 522 7832. Cost is £10. Join the ladies for an enjoyable get together. At 10.30am coffee served. There will be a talk with slides on the work of The Great North Air Ambulance, a light lunch and workshop with Katie-Jane Pridmore. The workshop will be based on three ways to use a supermarket bunch of mixed flowers. Take along a bunch of flowers and vase that you would normally use to put flowers in at home, a container and oasis to make an arrangement in. If you haven’t got anything suitable, Katie can supply a basic green container and foam for £1, a small selection of greenery from the garden, scissors, etc.

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group will meet on Thursday, April 14, at 6.45pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. Speaker will be John Anderson who brings an illustrated talk entitled ‘Climbing And Walking The Mountains.

Ewesley Road WI will meet today at 2.15pm in The Enid Dagg Room of the church.The speaker will be from The Street Pastors.

St Gabriel’s Church coffee morning will be held on Saturday, April 16, from 10.30am-noon and is in aid of St Gabriel’s Men’s Institute. Coffee and a scone is £1 and there will also be a cake stall and raffle.

Biscop’s At The Minster is now the name of the cafe at Sunderland Minster. It is open from 10am-3pm, Monday to Saturday, call in for a bite to eat and a cuppa.

Auditions will be held at The Royalty Theatre on Friday, April 15, at 7.30pm for The Pitmen Painters, which will be staged at the theatre from June 20 to 25. Two females are required, one young, one in their forties, and seven males of various ages.
