From Thursday, August 25, to Sunday, August 28, The Taming of the Shrew will be performed in Barnes Park at 6.30pm, enacted by the Theatre Space team. Meet the team at the Coach House Cafe entrance. Dress for the weather and follow the show around the park, taking in the hilarious Shakespearian Classic and the wonderful vista that is Barnes Park.

St Gabriel’s Church will hold its monthly coffee morning on Saturday, August 20, from 10.30am to noon and is in aid of church funds. Coffee and scone is £1 and there will also be a cake stall and raffle.

Barnes Pallion and Millfield Residents Association monthly meeting takes place on Tuesday 2nd August at 7p.m in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street, Millfield. On this occasion it will be their AGM

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, August 11, at 6.45pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. Guest speaker will be John Anderson talking about Archibald’s Journey– A Volunteer Soldier in The Boer War.

Founded by the West Area Committee, free holiday clubs will be running throughout the summer holidays and other school holidays through the year. Sessions are available at Silksworth Youth and Community Centre and Plains Farm Community Centre and are available to all school children aged five to 16 (children under eight must be accompanied by an adult). The sessions will include a free healthy meal. Sessions are suitable for all the family and will include recycling and upcycling projects, arts and crafts, litter picks, growing food and healthy eating, nature trails and sports. Week 1: tomorrow from 11am to 2pm for ages eight to 14, Plains Farm Community Centre, then from 5.30pm to 7.30pm Sports; Week 2: August 3, from 11am to 2pm for eight to 14 year, Plains Farm Community Centre, then from 5.30pm to 7.30pm sports activities in Barnes Park; Week 3:August 10, from 11am to 2pm, eight to 14 years, Plains Farm Community Centre, then from 5.30pm to 7.30pm sports activities in Barnes Park, August 14, from 2pm to 4pm, Litter pick, sports and bulb planting, meet at grassed area next to Hurstwood Road; Week 4: August 17, from 11am to 2pm, eight to 14 year, Plains Farm Community Centre, 5.30pm to 7.30pm sports activities in Barnes Park. Week 5: August 24, 11am to 2pm, eight to 14 year, Plains Farm Community Centre, then from 5.30pm to 7.30pm sports activities in Barnes Park. Then on August 26, from 2pm to 4pm litter pick, planting and sports, meet at grass area next to Hurstwood Road. Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club meet in St John’s Church, Ashbrooke, on Thursday, when Geoff Hughes will talk about Cragside –Upstairs Downstairs. Coffee will be served at 10am, meeting begins at 10.30am.

Ewesley Road WI is having an afternoon tea on Wednesday, August 10. This will be held in the main hall of Ewesley Road Church from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a tombola and white elephant stall and also a raffle. Entrance to this event is £3.

Sunderland Minster will hold a family fun day on Saturday, August 27, from 10am to 1pm. There is also a Celebration Sunday Serevice on Sunday, August 28.

The 2016 Active Sunderland West Area Sports Festival will be held on Wednesday, August 3, in Barnes Park. Go along and try the following activities for free: Table Tennis, swing ball, mini golf, dance, cheerleading, hula hoops, rugby, tennis, cricket and much more. Activities on the day are subject to change, but the following clubs, groups and activity providers are already confirmed as being in attendance on the day, Imagine Table Tennis Club, Foundation of Light (Niall’s Mile Walks, AAA Sports, Toukon Martial Arts, Sunderland Cricket Club, Inflatable Golf Driving Bay, Everyone Active. Activities are all free and there is no booking required, just turn up on the day.

Afternoon Tea will be served at St Nicholas Church on Saturday, August 6, from 3.30pm to 5pm. It will be held in the Haver Hall at the church. The cost is £3. On the menu will be sandwiches, scones, cakes and tea or coffee.

The Minster Olympics 2016 is an exciting summer holiday club for families with children aged up to 11 years old. This year it will be an Olympic theme with bible stories, music, crafts, friendship and food. Go along to Sunderland Minster on August 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 10am to 1pm. The cost will be £1 per child per day.

Sunderland Minster Vintage and Craft Fayre will take place on Saturday, August 6, from 10am to 3pm. Refreshments are available. Entry is 50p for adults, children free.

A soup and socks event will be held at St Nicholas Church on Wednesday, August 10, from noon to 1.30pm.
