Despite unfavourable weather Sunderland Men's Probus Club with family and friends of the members enjoyed a trip to Whitby. It was financially supported by The City of Sunderland's Community Chest Fund to whom Sunderland Men's Probus Club members are very grateful.

Sunderland Theatre Company is performing a Journey Through Oz, featuring music and songs from the many different stage shows and films that have been made. Based on the story of The Wizard Of Oz, from the famous MGM musical to the West End musical Wicked and Disney’s Oz, The Great and Powerful. Performances are on Friday at 7.15pm and Saturday at 4pm in Bede College, VPA Academy, Durham Road. Tickets are £10 and available through The Sunderland Theatre Company’s website sunderlandtheatre.co.uk or by calling 07944002454 or from any company member.

Sunderland Floral Art Club has no meeting this month. The next one will be on Tuesday, September 20, at 2pm in The Royalty Theatre. Guest demonstrator will be Katherine Hume, from Bishop Auckland, with her demonstration ‘Celebration’.

The Salvation Army, Rutland Street, is holding a table-top sale on Saturday, September 17, from 10am to noon. Anyone interested in hiring a table, at a cost of £8 each, should contact 0191 5280558.

A charity jumble sale will be held in the grounds of The Chesters Pub on Saturday, September 10, from 9am. Donations of items to sell would be greatly appreciated. Collection can be arranged by calling Ian on 07929010291.

The speaker at the first united meeting of The Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland Men’s Probus Clubs in Ashbrooke Pavilion last Tuesday was John Gibson, from Durham City. Members heard a talk on The Life of Captain Bligh of the Mutiny on The Bounty fame. All future meetings will take place in The Ashbrooke Pavilion at 10.30am on the second Tuesday of every month. New members are welcomed.

Minsterlympics is underway at Sunderland Minster. This is an exciting club for families (children up to 11 years). This year it has an Olympic theme with bible stories, music, crafts, friendship and food. Minsterolympics takes place this Saturdays 16th and August 27 from 10am and 1pm.

Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club will meet on Thursday, August 25, in St John’s Church, Ashbrooke. Liesbeth Langford will talk on Written By Candlelight. Coffee is served at 10am and the meeting begins at 10.30am.

As part of one of the biggest organ recital series in the North East, Sunderland Minster will welcome Emma Gibbons, from Newport Cathedral, who will be playing on Saturday from 1pm. Entry is free.

St Gabriel’s Church coffee morning will be held on Saturday from 10.30am to noon in aid of church funds. Coffee and scone will be £1. There will also be a cake stall and raffle.

Outlook, a relaxed midweek service, takes place at St Gabriel’s Church on Monday, August 22, from 2pm to 3pm. This is a short informal service followed by refreshments and a chat.

From Thursday, August 25, to Sunday, August 28, Taming of The Shrew will be staged around Barnes Park by The Theatre Space Team. Meet at The Coach House Cafe entrance at 6.30pm. Dress for the part and follow the show around the park, taking in this hilarious Shakespeare Classic and admire the wonderful park.

Visit Sunderland Minster for a family fun day on Saturday, August 27, from 10am to 1pm and also a Celebration Sunday Service on August 28, at 10.30am.

Arthritis Care Sunderland Group will meet on Wednesday, September 7, from 6pm to 8pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. Kevin Devine, from The Carers’ Centre, will be guest speaker.

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group holds exercise classes for you and your partner/carer at Bede Tower, Burdon Road, near The Civic Centre. They take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 11am and 11.15am to 12.15pm. Classes are done in a relaxed atmosphere and at your own pace.
