A few ladies from Sunderland Townswomen's Guild enjoyed a short an outing to Chester, Bakewell, and Llangollen.

George and Elizabeth (known as Bette) celebrated their 65th wedding on July 28. George worked in the shipyards for most of his working life and Bette. The couple have two sons and one daughter. They celebrated their anniversary at home with their family.

The speaker at the second meeting of the combined Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland Men’s Probus Club’s in The Ashbrooke Sports Pavilion on Tuesday 13th September at 10.30am will be Michael Foster, of Southwick, on The American Civil War. New members will be very welcome.

On Saturday, as part of National Heritage Day, St Mary Magdalene’s Church will be open from 11am with a display of vestments.

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group’s monthly meeting will be on Thursday at 6.45pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. This will be a free and easy meeting with bingo and chat.

Ewesley Road Ladies’ Fellowship is having a Fellowship get together tomorrow at 6.30pm at The Barnes.

St Nicholas Tots have fun filled toddler sessions every Tuesday and Thursday. The first session of the autumn term is today from 1.30pm to 3pm. If you are interested in attending for the first time, ring 07900545216.

A memorial service will be held at St Gabriel’s Church on Sunday, October 2, at 6.30pm. This moving and healing service is to remember those people who have had a funeral service of thanksgiving in the last six months. It will be led by St Gabriel’s Clergy team or readers, names are read out and candles lit. The service is followed by light refreshments. All are welcome.

Sunderland Floral Art Club will meet on Tuesday, September 20, at 2pm in The Royalty Theatre. Katherine Hume, from Bishop Auckland, will be the guest with her demonstration Celebration.

Sunderland Budgerigar Society will meet tomorrow at 7.30pm at Deptford and Millfield Community Association, Havelock Towers, 88 Hylton Road. The speaker will be Paul Redford, of Newcastle. All budgerigar fanciers, including those who might wish to consider starting in the budgerigar breeding hobby, are welcome. The meetings are very informal, with a brief business meeting and then a speaker. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served during the talk.

Outlook, a relaxed midweek service, will be held at St Gabriel’s Church on Monday, September 12, from 2pm to 3pm. Starting with a short, informal service, followed by refreshments and a chat.

Sunderland Lions Club restarts its meetings after the summer recess on Monday, September 12. This will be a meal at Ashbrooke Sports Club. Anyone interested in joining Lions is welcome to go along. Plans are already starting for the Boxing Day Dip and registration begins at the end of this month.

St Nicholas Church will once again be taking part in Heritage Open Days. People are invited to see the magnificent stained glass windows, which were designed by Leonard Evetts and all the glass made in Sunderland by Hartley Woods. The church will be open on Friday from 2pm to 4pm and Saturday from 11am to 3pm.

Arthritis Care Sunderland will meet tomorrow from 6pm to 8pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. Kevin Devine, from The Carers’ Centre, will be guest speaker.

Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club will hold its autumn fair on Thursday, September 22, at 10am in St John’s Church, Ashbrooke. Admission is £1.

Ewesley Road WI will meet in The Enid Dagg Room of the Church tomorrow at 2.15pm. Entertainment will be by Marrianne Hume. Stall will be harvest and the competition Guesstimate.

Soup and Socks will be held at St Nicholas Church on Saturday from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

A jumble sale will be held in the grounds of the Chesters Pub on Saturday from 9am. This event is in aid of Sunderland Prostrate Oncology Group. Donations of items to sell would be greatly appreciated. For collection, ring Ian on 07929010291.

New classes including a new ladies ballet, baby ballet and musical theatre for teens start Saturday and Monday, September 12, at the Susan Ridley School of Dance, at St Mary and St Peter’s Community Project Hall, Springwell Road. A coffee morning will be held at St Gabriel’s Church on Saturday, September 17, from 10.30am to noon, in aid of Save The Children. Coffee and scone will be £1, and there will also be a cake stall and raffle.
