Animal Magic was the theme for the evening at St Nicholas Wednesday Brownies when they created a whole menagerie of wild and wonderful peg animals. The girls also thoroughly enjoyed playing zoo trains, and anyone passing no doubt would have heard some strange noises coming from the hall.

The Salvation Army’s pre-Christmas coffee morning and sale was well attended. Doors were opened before the scheduled time to allow the queue of shoppers to enter.

June Waterstreet is guest speaker at Ewesley Road Ladies’ Fellowship on Wednesday at 7.30pm, and the talk will be on ‘Fundraising for Sunderland Royal’.

Ewesley Road WI meet in the Enid Dagg Room of the church on Wednesday at 2.15pm. This will be a members’ afternoon. The stall will be biscuits/chocolates, competition, guestimate and there will be tea hostessess.

Free courses are running at St Mark’s Community Association, Hylton Road, for anyone 50 or over amd unemployed. They will be in basic English, maths, computers, CV and work skills. It is just to help people back into work. Email [email protected]

A Christmas Tree Festival is at Ewesley Road Methodist Church on Saturday from 10.30pm. The church will be open from 10am for coffee and mince pies and for viewing of the Christmas trees.

An afternoon of Christmas Music is at Burn Park Methodist Church on Saturday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm featuring Alan Bowers, pianist, Rebecca Lland, soprano, John Raebar, tenor and Geoff Vincent, tenor. Tickets are £5 and include refreshments.

On Sunday at 11am, Morning Worship is at The Salvation Army, Rutland Street, followed at 6pm by Evening Worship with Churches Together.

A Carol Service will be held at Burn Park Methodist Church on Sunday, December 18, at 10.30am.

The speaker at the next joint meeting of the Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland Men’s Probus Clubs in Ashbrooke Sports Pavilion on Tuesday, December 13, at 10.30am will be Geraldene Straker from the Beamish Open Air Museum staff. She will give a progress report on the museum’s latest project, the 1950s. Visitors, for whom there is no admission charge, will be welcome.

Burn Park Methodist Church Christingle and Nativity Service is on Sunday at 10.30am. The service will be led by The Reverend Gareth Phillips.

Magic Christmas is at Deptford and Millfield Community Centre onMonday, December 19, at 6.30pm. Tickets are £4.

The Cribs and Bibles Exhibition is under way at Burn Park Methodist Church and continues until Christmas.

A Christmas Fun Day will be held at St Mark’s Community Association, Hylton Road, on Saturday starting at noon.

A table-op sale will be held at St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street, on Satturday at 10am. Tables are £5. Call 0191 565 6318 for more details. This will be followed by tea and bingo at 1.30pm.

A Christingle Service will be held at The Church of The Good Shepherd, Forest Road, on Sunday at 4pm.
