Arson probe launched at scene of Easter Sunday blaze which destroyed derelict building

An investigation is underway after five fire crews were called to a blaze which destroyed a derelict building.

The incident happened at South Hetton Road, Easington Lane, at around 10.15pm on Sunday, April 12 – Easter Sunday.

Crews from Farringdon, Marley Park, Rainton Bridge, South Shields and Sunderland Central stations were called to the fire at a two-storey property, next to a church.

A spokeswoman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) confirmed to the Echo that the cause of the fire was “suspected malicious” – and that the building was 70% severely damaged by fire.

Investigations are believed to be ongoing at the scene on Monday, April 13.

Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, two hose reels, a positive pressure ventilation system, three thermal imaging cameras and an aerial ladder platform to fight the fire.

The incident at the building, which was also 100% damaged by smoke, was brought under control shortly after 11.30pm on Sunday.
