Armed officers in Sunderland street - 'small axe' recovered and man arrested

Armed police were called to a Sunderland street following reports of a drunk man with an axe.

Northumbria Police said officers attended Stockton Terrace in the city at around 1.45pm on Thursday, May 28, after reports of a ‘disturbance' at an address.

Following a search in the area, which included armed officers, a 59-year-old man was arrested.

A small axe was also recovered at the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “At 1.45pm today, we received a report of a disturbance at an address on Stockton Terrace, Sunderland.

“It was reported that a man was on the street with a suspected axe and believed to be intoxicated.

“Officers were deployed to the area and, following a short search, located and arrested the 59-year-old suspect and recovered a small axe.

“He was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and currently remains in police custody.

“No one was injured during the incident.”
