Argentine international to return to Sunderland after La Liga loan

Vergini joined Spanish side Getafe on a season-long loan last July, with a view to a permanent switch at the end of the season.

But Getafe were relegated from La Liga last weekend and with cost-cutting now on the horizon, there have been widespread reports in Spain that Vergini will return to the Stadium of Light.

Vergini is one of several unwanted Sunderland players who have spent the season out on loan, but now face an uncertain future, with boss Allardyce forced to offload them again.

But the collapse of the Argentine international’s move to Getafe again reinforces the folly of signing him on a permanent basis last summer.

Sunderland were forced to sign Vergini after a clause was triggered following the quantity of appearances he had made during his season-long loan at the Stadium of Light.

But unlike predecessor Gus Poyet, Dick Advocaat made it crystal-clear that Vergini was not part of his plans and had told him to find a new club.

Vergini has at least been a regular for Getafe after 28 appearances, and Sunderland will hope that has caught the eye of other Spanish clubs.

There was also interest from Vergini’s homeland last summer after former club Newell’s Old Boys were in the running for his signature.
