All you need to know about the 2016 Rio Olympics with 100 days to go

Today marks 100 days until the start of the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro. Here's everything you need to know about the first ever Games to be held in South America:

When are the Games taking place?

The 28th Summer Olympics Games in Rio take place from August 5 to August 21.

How many athletes are due to take part?

It is estimated that there will be 10,500 athletes from 206 countries at this Summer's Games.

Will there be any North East athletes at the Games?

Sunderland Strollers' Aly Dixon is currently the only athlete from the North East who will be at the Games, after she secured her spot in Rio after last weekend's London Marathon.

Hartlepool's Savannah Marshall is expected to also be at the Games, although the Boxer does still need to qualify to secure her place.

How many events will there be?

Across the 42 sports that will be contested, 306 medal events will be held across the 17-day tournament, including 161 men's events, 136 women's events and nine mixed events.

Is there anything new this year?

The 2016 Games sees the re-introduction of two new sports to the Games - Golf and Rugby Sevens, 112 and 92 years since the last time they were played in the Olympics respectively.

How many venues will host the events?

There will be 32 competition venues across four regions of the city - Copacabana, Barra, Maracana and Deodoro.

When are the test events?
